Don't be fooled by LLMs: large language models do not truly reason

A former Google DeepMind researcher says an LLM's chain of thought is simply an extended iteration of the same next-token prediction process, not an independent reasoning mechanism like AlphaGo's. He identifies three major limitations: no persistent, inspectable cognitive state; knowledge and reasoning tangled together in the weights; and chains of thought that are often fabricated after the fact. He argues for borrowing AlphaGo's game-tree architecture to give machine reasoning an explicit cognitive state.

ServiceNow CoreAI launches AutoSynthData to generate training data for enterprise agents

ServiceNow CoreAI built AutoSynthData to find capability gaps from a target model's failures and a stronger teacher's successful trajectories, then generate and validate new tasks for post-training. As the model improves, the curriculum shifts to tasks that remain difficult. The process was demonstrated on the EnterpriseOps Gym dataset. Generated tasks must meet feasibility, realism, and difficulty requirements; validators must provide consistency, reliability, and completeness.

Karpathy shares four prompting techniques for understanding model outputs

Andrej Karpathy shared several ways to ask LLMs to make their outputs easier to understand: write using the ASD-STE100 controlled-language standard or relax it to 80%; generate diagrams; output an interactive webpage in HTML; or make a custom explainer video, for example with voiceover using an ElevenLabs API key. He thinks that as models improve, more work will move up to supervision and understanding, and models will be able to create large custom software artifacts that previously were not worth making.

Claude Code adds mods for customizing behavior, UI, and features

Boris Cherny says users can now customize how Claude works and looks just by prompting it. He argues that different working styles call for different Claude experiences and encourages sharing mods as plugins. In the quoted announcement, @ClaudeDevs says Claude Code mods can change behavior, customize the UI, and add users’ own features; users can write them with a few lines of TypeScript or have Claude build them, then install them with /plugin in the CLI or desktop app.

Why it matters: Packaging customizations as shareable plugins lets people with different working styles exchange changes to Claude Code’s behavior, interface, and features through the same installation workflow.
