GitHub launches ModernBERT-based secret detection model and expands push protection

GitHub released a ModernBERT classifier fine-tuned with Microsoft Applied Sciences that uses code context to identify secrets without a fixed format. It can assess a batch of candidate secrets in 2 milliseconds and is said to more than double the number it can block.

Why it matters: GitHub uses nine quarters of data to show the imbalance between secret leaks and manual remediation, and describes a model that moves detection earlier to the push stage.

SynthID Detector opens to all, including NVIDIA Cosmos watermarks

Google DeepMind's SynthID Detector is now available to everyone, letting users check whether online content was generated with Google AI or tools from industry partners including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, with Apple coming soon. NVIDIA AI said it watermarks content generated by NVIDIA Cosmos on build.nvidia.com, so anyone can upload that content to the detector and confirm it came from its models.

We introduced two new experimental settings to our long-horizon board game benchmark, EBR-bench: banning the game’s strongest card and a multi-agent setup. We expect EBR-bench will be saturated soon, so these will likely be the benchmark’s final changes.

Meta develops AI tool to identify ads secretly directing children to child sexual abuse material

Meta is rolling out a new AI tool to identify ads that appear normal but direct users off-platform to illegal child sexual abuse material. It has also added an LLM system to detect this kind of 'signposting'. In the first half of 2026, Meta acted on 33.2 million pieces of child sexual exploitation content on Facebook and Instagram; its systems found more than 97% before users reported them. In India during the same period, Meta acted on 5.3 million pieces, with more than 98% detected proactively.

Microsoft Research open-sources Agent Lightning v1.0, a 3,500-line lightweight agent RL framework for training with real harnesses

Microsoft Research open-sourced Agent Lightning v1.0, a lightweight agent reinforcement-learning framework of about 3,500 lines. Its Harnessed Agentic RL approach lets the same agent harness used in deployment participate directly in reinforcement learning, without reimplementing the agent inside a training framework.

Why it matters: The source gives the framework's code size, Kubernetes support, and training recipe, helping readers assess the cost of bringing a real harness into RL.

Perplexity releases pplx-embed-v2-late multimodal embedding models

Perplexity is releasing pplx-embed-v2-late, described as two late-interaction embedding models that retrieve text, images, and pages through a shared embedding space for cross-modal querying. The company says both models reach frontier performance and are publicly available on Hugging Face, with a blog post at perplexity.ai/hub/blog/multimodal-embeddings-beyond-a-single-vector.

How Cornerstone OnDemand cut database diagnosis time by 78% with Amazon Bedrock

Cornerstone OnDemand built Orion AI, a multi-agent system based on Amazon Bedrock and the open-source agent orchestration framework Strands Agents. It reduced database diagnosis time from 45 minutes to 10 minutes, a 78% reduction. It also compressed manual lifecycle operations from more than 10 steps to one interaction, a 70% reduction, and cut median redundant alerts by 65%. A three-person team delivered it in six months.

Michael Lynch on anti-patterns in software blog writing

Michael Lynch lists common anti-patterns in software blogging: lengthy openings, misjudging what readers already know, assuming they read earlier posts, excessive formality, and using links in place of explaining terms. He recommends writing articles that remain understandable even if readers click no links, and emphasizes writing in one's own voice. As more developers hand writing to AI, he says software blogs are becoming bland and homogeneous, while readers increasingly want distinctive writing.

Mistral releases 1-trillion-parameter Mistral Large 4, codenamed Le Chonk

Mistral released its 1-trillion-parameter Mistral Large 4, codenamed Le Chonk. Anyone can use and customize it for free during the preview; the final version is due by the end of the month. The model is for general tasks, with additional optimization for coding, cyber defense, and fields such as manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering. Mistral says Le Chonk is the strongest open-weight model outside China so far and comes close to some closed models. The company emphasized that it was trained from scratch rather than distilled.

Why it matters: Mistral is using a 1-trillion-parameter open-weight model to target specialized areas such as coding and cyber defense, offering a view of how the gap between open and closed models is changing.

Google launches SynthID website, opening AI-generated content detection to everyone

Google launched a new website on Tuesday that lets anyone check whether an image, video, or audio clip was AI-generated. The tool had previously been available only to select journalists, media professionals, and researchers. The site supports image formats including JPG, PNG, and GIF; video formats including MP4, MOV, and WEBM; and audio formats including WAV, MP3, and FLAC. Detection is based on SynthID, which Google introduced in 2023.

It is increasingly clear that humanity will solve the Riemann hypothesis before we pass the Physical Turing Test - you come back to a clean home after a wild Sunday party, and you can't tell whether a human or a robot did the job. We are not Moravec's paradox-pilled enough.
