OpenAI raises GPT-6.1 Sol default context to 500k in Codex and Work

OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux said the default context length for GPT-6.1 Sol when used through Codex and Work has increased to 500k, up from 272k, an increase of about 80%. He said this reduces how often compaction occurs and helps tasks that need to retain a lot of context over time, and that users can override it, with a maximum context length of 1M.

OpenAI and Anthropic announced a broad set of model, product, and access changes this week. OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 with Intelligent UI in ChatGPT, with GPT-6 Sol on paid plans and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go, and said GPT-6 Astra scored 55.0% versus GPT-5.6 Sol’s 41.6% on 11 contracting tasks. Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5 at $0.10 / $0.50 per million tokens for prompts up to 100K, with a 1M context window.
