Who
The Verge
What
confirmed that a photo Trump posted showing a restored White House column was flagged as AI-generated

What happened

President Donald Trump posted White House renovation photos on Truth Social, including a column restoration comparison that appears AI-edited. The Verge independently checked the image with Google’s SynthID Detector, which flagged it as “made or edited with OpenAI.” Inconsistent steps and nearly identical details also raised questions, though real photos show painting work in June. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The story so far

President Donald Trump posted photos promoting White House renovation work on Truth Social, including a column restoration comparison that The Verge said Google’s SynthID Detector flagged as “made or edited with OpenAI.” The detector result indicates possible AI involvement in the image; it does not establish that the restoration work itself was fabricated. The Verge also pointed to inconsistent steps and nearly identical details in the comparison as reasons to question the image. Real photos show painting work at the White House in June. The White House did not immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment.
