With collaborators at the University of Pennsylvania, we developed LitPivot , a system that helps researchers navigate these pivots.

What happened

Ai2 and University of Pennsylvania collaborators developed LitPivot, a research system that connects proposal revisions with relevant literature retrieved through Asta Paper Finder. It organizes papers around a proposal’s problem, contribution, and evaluation plan, offering critiques and suggested revisions supported by excerpts. In a study with 17 researchers, two domain experts unaware of which tool participants used rated proposals developed with LitPivot as better grounded in relevant literature than those developed with a text editor and an AI chat tool.

The story so far

Ai2 and University of Pennsylvania collaborators developed LitPivot, a system for revising early-stage research proposals using relevant literature; in a study with 17 researchers, two domain experts rated proposals developed with LitPivot as better grounded in relevant literature than those developed with a text editor and an AI chat tool. LitPivot retrieves papers through Asta Paper Finder and organizes them around a proposal’s problem, contribution, and evaluation plan. It provides critiques and suggested revisions supported by excerpts from those papers. The experts who assessed the study proposals did not know which tools participants had used.
