Android adds AI scam protection to Google Messages
Android is using AI to suss out scammers in Google Messages
What happened
Android is introducing new scam defenses, including an opt-in enhanced protection setting for Google Messages rolling out in the coming weeks. It uses cloud-based Gemini models to assess conversations with unrecognized senders and on-device Gemini Nano to check unfamiliar links before users open them. Additional safeguards block apps from enabling call forwarding and conceal sensitive information during screen-sharing in Chrome and Android WebView.
