Design platform Canva released its first image generation model, called Canva Craft, developed by its research team to compete with same-category models from Google, OpenAI, ByteDance, and Meta.
What happened
Canva released Canva Craft, its first image generation model, to all users through Dream Lab. Canva says the model plans layouts before generating images at up to 2K resolution across 30 aspect ratios, supporting legible text and precise edits. Trained on human-designed templates, its outputs can be converted into layered designs using Canva Magic; API access and support through Canva’s MCP are planned.

Canva launched Canva Craft, its first image generation model, and made it available to all users globally through the Dream Lab tab on its platform. Canva says the model uses a two-stage architecture that plans layouts before generating images, supporting output at up to 2K resolution, legible text and precise edits. TechCrunch reported support for 30 aspect ratios, while The Verge reported more than 30. Canva says it trained Craft on millions of human-made templates. Its outputs can be converted into layered designs using Canva Magic. Canva also plans API access, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast variants, and image generation in third-party chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini through Canva’s Model Context Protocol (MCP).
