Canva is diving even deeper into AI with the launch of an image generation model that competes directly with those from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google.
What happened
Canva launched Canva Craft, an image generation model whose two-stage architecture plans designs before generating images, which Canva says improves precision, consistency, and control. It supports up to 2K resolution and more than 30 aspect ratios, and Canva says it trained the model on millions of human-made templates. Craft is available now to all users globally through Dream Lab, with Craft-fast, Craft-ultrafast, and access through Model Context Protocol planned.
Why it matters
Canva’s use of human-made templates as training data provides context for its emphasis on design layouts, legible text, and precise object placement.

The story so far
Canva launched Canva Craft, its first image generation model, and made it available to all users globally through the Dream Lab tab on its platform. Canva says the model uses a two-stage architecture that plans layouts before generating images, supporting output at up to 2K resolution, legible text and precise edits. TechCrunch reported support for 30 aspect ratios, while The Verge reported more than 30. Canva says it trained Craft on millions of human-made templates. Its outputs can be converted into layered designs using Canva Magic. Canva also plans API access, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast variants, and image generation in third-party chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini through Canva’s Model Context Protocol (MCP).
