Microsoft is announcing its third-generation Maia in-house AI chip today, designed to be the “primary AI inference system” for Microsoft’s products and services.
What happened
Microsoft announced Maia 300, its third-generation in-house AI chip, with production rollout starting in 2027 and plans to make Maia its primary AI inference system. Microsoft expects 40 percent more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems and up to 7x Maia 200’s rack-scale token throughput in a full 96-accelerator configuration. Built on TSMC’s N2P process node, Maia 300 separates compute, memory controller, and I/O functions through a new chiplet architecture.

The story so far
Microsoft announced Maia 300, its third-generation in-house AI chip, with production rollout starting in 2027, alongside plans to expand the Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments that year and make it the primary inference system for Microsoft’s products and services. Microsoft claims Maia 300 will produce 40 percent more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems and up to seven times Maia 200’s rack-scale token throughput in a full 96-accelerator configuration. Satya Nadella described the efficiency gain as 40 percent more tokens per watt. Built on TSMC’s N2P process, Maia 300 uses a chiplet architecture that separates compute, memory-controller and I/O functions, and targets long inputs, fast chats and agentic tasks. Maia 200 already runs Microsoft Copilot in the US, Europe and Australia, according to Microsoft executive Scott Guthrie, with GitHub Copilot and Foundry scheduled to follow by the end of 2026.
