Google brings Skills to Gemini, replacing Gems
Google drops Gems for Skills, joining OpenAI and Anthropic in the shift to agent-ready prompt formats
What happened
Google launched Skills globally in Gemini chat: detailed prompts for specific tasks that AI can help write and refine, which users invoke with a slash and a name. Skills replace Gems, which will be discontinued for personal accounts in November, for business and nonprofit Workspace customers in March 2027, and for education customers in June 2027. Existing Gems will be converted automatically.
