We’re introducing GPT-6.1 Terra , a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use alongside clearer, more natural writing.

What happened

OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, emphasizing visual reasoning, precise computer use, and clearer writing. Simon Willison quotes OpenAI’s Ted Sanders describing Terra as probably better than Astra and Sol at technical communication, similar but much faster at vision and computer use, and somewhat worse at most other tasks. Pricing is $1/million input tokens and $5/million output tokens, almost half the price of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol and around 10x the price of GPT-6 Luna.

    The story so far

OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a model it says can interpret screens and act across apps, with access available through the API and to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, according to The Decoder. Artificial Analysis reports API prices of $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, down from GPT-5.6 Terra’s $2 and $12; The Decoder lists cached input at $0.05 per million tokens. In Artificial Analysis evaluations at maximum reasoning effort, Terra gained six points on the Intelligence Index over its predecessor while cost per task fell from $1.40 to $0.40. On AA-Omniscience, its hallucination rate fell from 88% to 38%, alongside a two-point accuracy increase. Terra scored 48 on the Coding Agent Index v2.0, below GPT-6.1 Sol’s 54 and above GPT-6 Luna’s 31. OpenAI’s Ted Sanders described Terra as probably better than Astra and Sol at technical communication, similar but much faster at vision and computer use, and somewhat worse at most other tasks, according to Simon Willison. OpenAI continues to recommend Astra and Sol for deep research and complex coding, according to Baoyu.
