Bringing foundational models to the front lines of TB screening

What happened

Google Research describes how its TB screening research progressed into clinical deployment through Nexus AI and open models including MedGemma and MedSigLIP. More than 90 clinicians have evaluated over 25,000 chest radiographs using Nexus AI’s tool, reducing turnaround times from weeks to under 45 seconds. Indonesia’s Ministry of Health is fine-tuning MedGemma and MedSigLIP on domestic chest radiographs to support its goal of screening 50 million citizens annually while keeping patient data within national borders.

Why it matters

The deployment account illustrates how prospective clinical validation, regulatory certification, offline operation, and local partnerships contribute to bringing medical AI into resource-constrained healthcare settings.
