Nathan Lambert Sees Coding Agents and Inference Compute Changing How We Work

What happened

Nathan Lambert says coding agents and inference compute are changing how people work and accelerating efforts against scaling laws’ exponentials. He considers the linked post increasingly likely after the election, as a data center slowdown approaches, and says further acceleration is not inevitable.

With the data center slowdown coming after the election, I find this post increasingly likely. There’s way more incentive in a path that seems eminently doable. I consider this in line with the acceleration in AECI from the recent METR report. Coding agents and inference compute changes how we work — giving an acceleration in our battle against scaling laws’ exponentials. It doesn’t mean more accelerations are inevitable.

The story so far

Nathan Lambert says coding agents and inference compute are changing how people work and accelerating efforts to move beyond exponential scaling laws. He says further acceleration is not inevitable. Lambert considers the linked post increasingly likely after the election, as a slowdown in data center construction approaches.
