What happened
Nathan Lambert reports that Kimi K3.1 has been announced as 3.1 Pro and says its benchmark scores appear strongest among current open-weight models, conditional on the promised weights release by November 4th. He highlights the Kimi team's stated approach to moderating open-weight cyber capabilities relative to the closed frontier. K3.1 costs less per token than K3, but Lambert notes that higher token usage on some benchmarks could make per-answer costs similar; informal testing remains an open question.

Kimi K3.1 is announced as 3.1 Pro. The benchmark scores look to be clearly the strongest current open weight model, if the weights are released as they claim by November 4th. They are very impressive scores.
The Kimi team makes very clear statements about cyber risks and trying to pace the frontier of open-weight cyber capabilities and moderate it with respect to the closed frontier.
Much to be learned in how the model stands up the vibe tests, but in the last few years the Moonshot team has rarely missed with the kimi models. K3.1 is also cheaper than K3 per token, but some benchmarks in the blog show it uses meaningfully more tokens per answer, so it may be about the same price.
This, with all the cyber news, and rumors of a bigger GLM model coming soon, sets us up for an exciting rest of the year! The pro name makes me think Kimi will be moving to release flash model soon too, similar to DeepSeek and GLM.
The story so far
Kimi launched K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed across Kimi.ai, Kimi Work, Kimi Code and the Kimi API, with model weights promised by November 4, 2026. Baoyu also reported same-day access to K3.1 Pro through the Kimi app. Kimi describes K3.1 Pro as a multimodal mixture-of-experts model with a 1 million-token context window, 2.8 trillion total parameters and 104 billion active parameters. The company says Highspeed is 2–3 times faster and claims K3.1 Pro reduces hallucinations in finance work by 65%. Nathan Lambert identified K3.1 Pro as the previously tested K3.1 and said its benchmark scores appeared strongest among current open-weight models, conditional on the promised weights release. Before launch, Leifeng.com reported strong Three.js and interactive 3D results in user tests, alongside an awkward-looking giraffe animation; one comparison put its cost at about one-fourteenth that of GPT-6 Astra. Lambert separately said K3.1 costs less per token than K3, but higher token use on some benchmarks could leave the cost per answer similar.
